BC: Taxpayers Lash Receipt Flip lop

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/10/25

Our supporters are steaming over the flip flop by B.C. Liberal and NDP MLAs to NOT release expense receipts. Here’s a small sample of the mail we have been receiving on this (many of which have also been sent to various MLAs):

Alan from Surrey: “It is important to me to know exactly how my hard earned dollars are being spent.  All the sordid details please not simply some vague overview.”

Bryan from Kelowna: “The decision you made, which allows detail of expenses to remain hidden, tells me and every other thinking taxpayer that you have something to hide.”

Michael: “The public has a right to know how each of you spend our tax dollars as our public servants.  Remember... you serve us... not the other way around. Most of us do care about your spending habits and so I am writing to you today as a reminder of your duties.”

Norbert: “You have once again proved that you cannot be trusted. By not disclosing expenses you must have something to hide. But then and now it’s not your money.”

Bob and Anne from Sechelt: “Taxpayers want to know, and have the right to know, what is happening to their money and exactly how it is being used! There should be no need for "burrowing down" in order to obtain this information! Does the word "transparency" not mean anything to this committee?”

Jeff from Richmond: “We've heard from politicians from both sides of the political spectrum how accountability in the public sector is paramount, yet when it comes to an individual MLA and his/her expenses, we are being told detailed receipts is not. I see it differently, the public purse, the basis for your income and expenses is just that, public. It's time to pull back the curtain and show the public what's being done with our money.”

Ron from Vancouver: “I've worked in private industry, mostly manufacturing, for over 35 years, where I prepared budgets, submit expenses to management and shareholders/stakeholders. And at no time did I get a "blank check" to spend money on anything that wasn't a legitimate or approved expense. I've never had the privilege of working for a business/service that didn't have the ability to go bankrupt nor the ability to stare down the pipe of an index pension. If you're ashamed of publishing your paid-by-the-taxpayer expenses, I think you just made that declaration.”
